Opening Day at the Lake County Fair Brings Joy and Tradition

Excitement at the Downdraft Ride

Tabitha Wright and Ella Roye, both eager eighth graders from Wheeler Middle School, recently experienced the thrilling Downdraft ride at the Lake County Fair in Crown Point, Indiana. The ride, with its suspended passengers and dizzying spins, brought unexpected excitement and smiles to their faces. Wright, a Crown Point local, exclaimed about the unexpected speed they encountered. This adventurous duo joined countless visitors for the opening day of festivities.

Families Gathering for Tradition and Fun

The annual Lake County Fair, in its 174th edition, runs through August 16. It offers a wonderful blend of entertainment and tradition. Admission is $8 for those over 11, while children under 10 enjoy free entry. Visitors can indulge in fried treats, experience rides, and interact with 4-H farm animals.

Jordan Wagner and her daughter Hayden were among the animal exhibitors, showing their sheep, Madonna. They traveled from Berrien Springs, Michigan, marking Friday as their sole day at the fair. Wagner finds joy in watching her daughter participate in these shows, remembering her own history with animal showing in her youth.

4-H Enthusiasts Show Their Skills

Lily Hamilton, from Crown Point, proudly showcased her one-year-old cochin bantam at the fair. Hamilton has been engaged with 4-H for nearly nine years and finds camaraderie among fellow participants to be a highlight. This involvement allows her to forge new friendships and share experiences.

Community and Nostalgia Connect Visitors

Greg and Linda Smith from Cedar Lake walked through the fairgrounds, admiring a variety of animals on display. They have attended the fair for around a decade, making the opening day a cherished annual tradition. Watching animals and mingling with others adds to their enjoyment.

Brett Walker and Heather Miller from St. John also participated with their children, Damien and Dax. The family enjoyed exploring the fairgrounds, with the children expressing enthusiasm for rides and animal exhibits. The fair serves as a perfect conclusion to a summer filled with activities.
