At the Park Slope Food Co-op, a socially minded grocery store located in a liberal area, tensions run high. The co-op is facing dysfunction as it approaches a significant vote scheduled for Tuesday. This vote concerns a proposed boycott against a range of about a dozen Israeli products. The context of this proposal stems from an ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
Within the co-op, the atmosphere hums with customers browsing through fresh produce, frozen goods, and prepared meals. Outside, the presence of two tables represents the divide among members. Each table signifies one side of the debate about whether to proceed with the boycott of Israeli products.
The co-op acts as a cultural reflection for many liberals in Brooklyn, capturing their anxieties and consumer habits. In recent years, the issue has caused significant division among co-op members, leading to heated debates during meetings. The vote will take place at Tuesday night’s general meeting.
Recently, members received an email informing them of heightened security measures for the co-op building. A special check-in station is also being introduced. These precautions come after the co-op received threats, suspicious substances in the mail, aggressive phone calls, and hostile social media interactions.
“While the overwhelming majority of members have continued to engage respectfully and cooperatively, we have also seen incidents that have gone beyond normal disagreement and escalated into verbal confrontations and, in some cases, physical altercations between Co-op members,” the email stated.
In a distressing moment during a recent meeting, discussions around antisemitism prompted laughter, with some dark implications about Jewish influence in the United States surfacing. These reactions caused concern among several Jewish leaders and co-op members. The Park Slope Food Co-op is among the nation’s largest and oldest, boasting a membership of around 17,000 people.
