Mary Peltola Takes Lead in Senate Race

Former Alaska congresswoman Mary Peltola is leading against incumbent Dan Sullivan in the race for Alaska’s Senate seat. A recent New York Times/Siena University poll shows Peltola with 50% of the vote, compared to Sullivan’s 43%, resulting in a 7-percentage-point margin in her favor. This poll surveyed 504 likely voters between September 24 and October 1 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.1 percentage points.

Reaction to Poll Results

Peltola celebrated the results on social media, highlighting her campaign’s progress since June when she was trailing by 2 points. “In June, we were down by 2 points. This month, in the very same poll, we’re up by 7,” she wrote on X. Peltola aims to become Alaska’s first Democratic senator since Mark Begich’s defeat in 2014.

Comparing Poll Data

Previous surveys at the end of September depicted a tight race. A Quantus Insight poll, held from September 28-30 among 758 likely voters, had Sullivan slightly ahead with 46.1% over Peltola’s 45.5%; however, this difference was smaller than the poll’s 8-point margin of error. A Trafalgar Group poll from September 22-24 among 1,079 likely voters showed Sullivan leading by 1 point, while a co/efficient poll from September 14-17 among 799 likely voters gave Sullivan a 2-point advantage. Meanwhile, an Alaska Survey Research poll conducted September 10-12 among 1,352 likely voters gave Peltola a 5-point lead, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Controversy Surrounding Peltola

The latest poll comes amid accusations reported by the New York Times, alleging Peltola used offensive language towards staffers. These claims were published on September 23 and include the use of derogatory slurs. Peltola’s campaign denies these allegations, attributing her reported behavior to personal grief she was facing at the time.

Voter Reactions and Campaign Strategies

Sullivan’s campaign is leveraging these allegations, using them in campaign ads against Peltola. Despite the report, Alaska voters appear unchanged in their views, even when expressing disappointment. Many liberals support Peltola, hoping to strengthen the Democratic presence in Congress. Commentator James Carville also voiced support for concentrating on Democratic gains, stating, “staffers who complained about Democrats needed to put their heads down to ‘save the country.'”

Peltola’s campaign criticizes Sullivan for his financial conduct, focusing on his violation of the STOCK Act in 2022. Reports describe Sullivan as a frequent stock trader, swelling his personal wealth. In contrast, Peltola campaigns on banning congressional stock trading, and her financial disclosures indicate no significant individual stock holdings.

Why Alaska’s Race Is Significant

Alaska represents an opportunity for Democrats in the Senate, where Republicans have a narrow majority of 53 to 47. Gaining a net of four seats would grant Democrats control. Despite Alaska’s historical Republican preference in presidential elections, Democrats sense potential as Peltola gains polling strength.

Peltola’s centrist platform targets independents and moderate Republicans, contrasting Sullivan’s endorsement by Donald Trump. Interestingly, Trump’s popularity may be waning, with 48% of Alaskans disapproving of his job performance according to the same poll. Previously, in June, disapproval stood at 43%.

The upcoming election will determine if Peltola’s rising momentum can overcome the state’s historical Republican lean.
