Two Philadelphia police officers were hospitalized after being shot early Saturday while responding to a call in the western part of the city. According to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, a 40-year-old officer, who has two children, was shot three times. A 33-year-old officer, with five children, was shot 12 times.
Bethel praised the officers for their bravery and dedication, stating, “I am so proud of the men and women who serve in this department. They consistently face dangers and risk their lives for this job.” He urged the public to support the officers and their efforts.
The incident began just after 12:20 a.m. when officers were dispatched to 140 North 52nd Street after receiving a report of a man with a gun on a porch. Upon arrival, officers encountered significant gunfire. Shortly after, additional officers and a SWAT team found the original responders wounded on the porch.
The suspect fired at two more officers, but the SWAT team managed to locate the suspect in a tree and take him into custody. Both injured officers were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for surgery, although their conditions remain unclear.
The suspect reportedly ambushed the officers by shooting at them from an alley. The suspect was found armed with two handguns, one of which belonged to one of the shot officers, and a shotgun.
