Potential Contenders for the 2028 Presidential Race and Current Polling Insights

2 days ago 0

As the midterm elections draw near, there is increasing speculation about possible contenders for the 2028 presidential race. Current polling highlights figures like Vice President JD Vance and former Vice President Kamala Harris as potential frontrunners. The field may become clearer in the coming weeks as events unfold.

Traditionally, the months following midterm elections help define the presidential field, as potential candidates start preparing their campaigns. Questions about possible runs have been directed to both Harris and Vance, along with Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Even Donald Trump has been asked about successors to the MAGA movement. Previously, Harris lost her 2024 White House bid to Trump.

Polling Insights

A YouGov/Economist poll released recently places Harris’ favorability slightly ahead of Vance’s. Harris scores 43 percent favorability compared to Vance’s 41 percent. However, both face significant unfavorable ratings, with Harris at 54 percent and Vance at 53 percent. The poll involved 1,440 registered U.S. voters and has a 3 percent margin of error.

Florida Atlantic University’s political professor Craig Agranoff commented that with the midterm results, discussions on 2028 will intensify. Early polling should not be seen as a definitive forecast. The leadership, dynamics, and voter preferences will evolve considerably over two years.

The Democratic and Republican fields, according to recent surveys, show Vance leading among Republicans, with Harris ahead amid a dispersed Democratic field. Despite this, many Democrats have yet to express a preference, highlighting the significance of name recognition in these early numbers. Actual campaigns, debates, and turnout during primaries will alter the field before 2028.

The Harvard CAPS / Harris Poll aligns with these findings, revealing a similar favorability for Harris at 43 percent and for Vance at 41 percent. However, both have higher unfavorable ratings. The Marquette Law School Poll from earlier this year presents Harris with a lower favorability at 37 percent and a high unfavorable rating at 58 percent.

Syracuse University’s political science professor Grant Davis Reeher emphasized the preliminary nature of current discussions. Midterm outcomes might influence perceptions, but they won’t substantially define individual presidential candidates.

Overall, YouGov shows Harris with a popularity rating of 49 percent, while Vance is at 38 percent. Their metrics account for positive views as a percentage of all opinions given. A New York Times/Siena Research Institute poll indicated both Harris and Vance leading their parties in premature 2028 primary discussions.

Potential 2028 Runs

JD Vance has consistently refrained from committing to a 2028 presidential run, prioritizing his current role. In interviews, he has expressed a tentative approach to discussing a future campaign, emphasizing current responsibilities.

Conversely, Harris has shown some openness to a potential run. In various interviews, she has spoken about contemplating her future plans in relation to presidential candidacy, focusing on the broader impact on American citizens.

Ultimately, the dynamics may shift significantly as candidates solidify their intentions, strategies, and public support. As inquiries continue, new figures may emerge, influencing the journey toward the 2028 elections.
