President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, traveled to Ukraine after discussions in Moscow about resolving the conflict with Russia. This trip marks their first visit to Ukraine since Trump returned to office, pledging to address the ongoing war.
On the eve of their arrival, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for security guarantees and peace in a social media post. The envoys engaged in talks with Zelenskyy following their landing in Kyiv on September 6, 2026.
In Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner participated in a three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. A White House official stated that they discussed substantive plans, which will be revealed in the coming weeks.
President Trump informed reporters about the envoys’ mission to propose an end to the conflict, expressing optimism about achieving peace.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov acknowledged the U.S. delegation’s preparation for the trip and hinted at formulated ideas for resolving the situation, although details were not disclosed.
During the Moscow meeting, captured on video, Putin requested Kushner and Witkoff convey his warm wishes to Trump, describing the Ukrainian conflict as complex. Ushakov mentioned that discussions also included potential beneficial agreements between the U.S. and Russia.
Both Ukraine and Russia agreed to halt strikes temporarily during the envoys’ visit to facilitate talks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced Putin’s order to cease strikes on Kyiv for three days, a gesture linked to the envoys’ presence. Zelenskyy mirrored the decision, pausing strikes until Monday.
Additionally, a White House official expressed gratitude to Putin for freeing U.S. Marine veteran Robert Gilman, who was held in Russia since 2022.
