Progressive Candidate Defeated in Wisconsin Democratic Primary

In a significant political development, Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary concluded with state Rep. Francesca Hong losing to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. This outcome took place one week after Abdul El-Sayed’s narrow victory in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, highlighting a potential preference for the party’s moderate candidates over its progressive wing.

Hong, associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, trailed closely behind Crowley despite earlier predictions suggesting she led the race. Her defeat marks a crucial moment as the Democrats prepare for the general election in November.

Wisconsin Democratic voters raised concerns about the “electability” of progressive Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong, thus favoring David Crowley.

Some Wisconsin Democratic voters supported Crowley due to doubts about Hong’s ability to secure a win in the general election. Linda Pullman, a local from Madison, reflected this sentiment, stating, “I wasn’t sure she would win. So, I voted for Crowley.” Elise, a college student, expressed disappointment at Hong’s loss.

Crowley received backing from the outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers. Both Evers and Crowley argued that Hong might risk losing Democratic control of the governorship due to her leftist ideologies.

Jonathan Greenberg, a Madison resident, noted that many voters decided last minute, influenced by Evers’ endorsement of Crowley and fears of Hong not resonating well outside major cities.

Hong faced scrutiny for controversial stances such as police defunding. Although appearing moderate to some, these views posed challenges in securing broader support. Natalie McFadden, a Crowley supporter, noted that such positions could alienate swing voters.
