Vacationers fled for safety on Monday after a projectile hit a crowded beach in Arkhipo-Osipovka, a Russian Black Sea resort town. The incident resulted in seven fatalities, including four children, and injuries to dozens more, according to officials.
Video footage from the site near Gelendzhik shows a beach filled with visitors at the time of the strike. The Russian Mission in Geneva claimed on social media platform X that the attack was a drone strike executed by Ukraine, accusing Kyiv of targeting civilians.
Drone Attack Claims
Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated on Telegram that the attack was directed at civilian infrastructure and labeled it a deliberate act against civilians disconnected from military objectives. He condemned the incident as a terrorist act against children.
The attack targeted civilian infrastructure. Emergency and special services are working at the crash site.
Andriy Kovalenko, an officer with Ukraine’s Defense Forces, contested Russia’s narrative, attributing the deaths to Russian air defenses intercepting a drone. According to his account, debris from the intercepted drone fell onto the beach.
Details of the Incident
Footage captured the moment with sounds akin to gunfire heard before a drone hit the beach, igniting an explosion that sent beachgoers into a panic. Russian reports preliminarily identified some of the fatalities as resulting from “falling drone debris,” as stated by Kondratyev.
Kovalenko mentioned Ukraine’s focus on targeting Russian military-industrial locations to disrupt Moscow’s war financing. He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of harboring a false sense of security for Russian civilians by attributing explosions to other causes and deploying air defenses near populated areas.
Smoke was noted rising from the deadly explosion, adding to the chaos at the resort.
Kovalenko further criticized Putin’s decisions, implicating them in the chain of events leading to the tragedy. He maintained that Putin’s initiation of the conflict and air defense strategies resulted in the casualties.
