The Education Department engaged with numerous districts towards the end of the Biden administration. Progress in these cases has stalled since the president assumed office, highlighting ongoing challenges in addressing racial issues in schools.
A complaint was submitted to the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights by a mother from Michigan. She reported severe racial harassment experienced by her middle-school daughter, which has left the young girl deeply traumatized.
By the arrival of Black History Month in 2024 at Chesaning Middle School, located in central Michigan, a significant ongoing issue affected the only Black girl in the fifth grade. She faced multiple racial slurs from fellow students. On the school bus, peers reportedly called her “monkey” and directed the n-word at her, adding comments that her skin was “burnt like a piece of chicken.” These incidents underscore the need for increased protection and support for students facing racial discrimination.
