Saikat Chakrabarti’s Congressional Bid in San Francisco

4 weeks ago 0

Saikat Chakrabarti, known for his role as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s former chief of staff, is actively campaigning for the congressional seat in San Francisco. This seat is currently held by Representative Nancy Pelosi, who is retiring. Although Chakrabarti has a prominent political background, his candidacy comes with its own complications.

In 2019, Chakrabarti worked closely with Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York. However, a current campaign billboard draws attention to a past conflict by displaying the message “A.O.C. FIRED SAIKAT.” This highlights a complicated history that Chakrabarti openly acknowledges during his campaign. He often mentions his past with Ocasio-Cortez, using it as part of his campaign narrative, by referencing his time with her in speeches and advertisements.

Conversely, Ocasio-Cortez has been actively supporting other left-wing candidates across different states but has not mentioned Chakrabarti. This lack of endorsement from his former colleague adds complexity to his campaign efforts.

Chakrabarti faces competition in the race from Connie Chan, a supervisor in San Francisco. Chan recently gained a significant endorsement from the retiring Nancy Pelosi. As a progressive rival, Chan’s campaign positions her as a key contender against Chakrabarti.

Polls indicate that State Senator Scott Wiener is leading, with both Chakrabarti and Chan trailing closely behind. The upcoming primary on June 2 will determine which candidates progress, making these final campaign weeks crucial for Chakrabarti.
