Senate Passes Bipartisan Russia Sanctions Bill Led by Late Lindsey Graham

The Senate passed a bipartisan bill on Russia sanctions, legislation spearheaded by the late Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina. Graham, who passed unexpectedly last month at 71, played a crucial role in advocating for the bill. The bill aims to target the Russian economy, seeking an end to the war triggered by President Putin’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which has resulted in numerous civilian deaths.

A strong Senate vote of 86 to 11 approved the bill, which focuses on sanctioning key Russian leaders and imposing severe penalties on countries buying oil and natural gas from Russia. It authorizes President Trump to levy tariffs, reaching up to 100%, on major importers like China and India. Additionally, the bill extends Iran sanctions.

Before his death, Graham met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and secured White House backing for the bill. Following Graham’s death, his Senate peers decided to name the bill in his honor. Sen. Darline Graham, appointed to fulfill her brother’s term, echoed Graham’s foreign policy and peace-making aspirations by emphasizing the bill’s impact on Russia’s energy-dependent war funding.

The bill now awaits approval from the House before President Trump can sign it. Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed support, although Johnson faces challenges with some House Democrats opposing Trump’s enhanced tariff powers.
