Senator John Fetterman Discusses Democratic Party and Support for Israel

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania has voiced concerns about the Democratic Party’s stance on support for Israel, suggesting that the party’s “big tent” is increasingly accommodating views that criticize American policies more than those who strongly support Israel.

Speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Fetterman highlighted how this shift has created tension within his party. He expressed that it seems easier to find inclusion among those who hold negative views about America, such as saying “America deserved 9/11,” than it is to proudly support Israel. This reflects a growing anti-Israel sentiment among Democrats, which Fetterman indicated could eventually lead him to reconsider his party affiliation.

“It’s easier to be included in that big tent to say ‘America deserved 9/11’ or America is ‘worse than Al-Qaeda’ than being very proud to stand on the side of Israel,” Fetterman remarked.

The senator referenced comments made by Hasan Piker, a streamer who once stated “America deserved 9/11” during a livestream. Although Piker later clarified he did not believe in and support those remarks, Fetterman used the popularity of Piker’s appearances as evidence of growing political enthusiasm on the left.

A Pew Research Center survey conducted in March showed a notable shift in Democratic voters’ attitudes towards Israel, with 80% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents expressing an unfavorable view, compared to 53% in 2022.

Fetterman noted this trend, warning that more members of the Democratic caucus are becoming increasingly anti-Israel. He pointed to Senate votes against Israeli military assistance as evidence of this shift in sentiment, stating, “If our party ever becomes, and just makes it official, the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave, because that’s been a moral clarity for me.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin addressed this issue, defending the Democrats as a “big tent” party, while distancing the DNC from Hasan Piker, emphasizing that Piker does not represent the party or its candidates.

While referring to the actions of Sen. Bernie Sanders, Fetterman also mentioned resolutions by Senate Democrats to block sales of military equipment to Israel, highlighting the complex dynamics within the party concerning Israeli military assistance.
