Senator Scott Wiener Confronted at San Francisco’s Trans March

California state Senator Scott Wiener experienced a tense confrontation at San Francisco’s Trans March, marking the beginning of Pride Weekend. The incident occurred at Dolores Park, where demonstrators challenged him over his views on Israel and Gaza.

A video that circulated online captured several individuals surrounding Wiener and shouting profanity-filled messages. One individual, Dimitry Yakoushkin, voiced criticism of Wiener’s position on the Gaza conflict as the senator distanced himself from the group.

“I think your policy on the genocide is terrible! I think you do not belong here!” said Yakoushkin in the video, expressing disappointment over Wiener’s stance on international issues.

Yakoushkin also accused Wiener of betraying the LGBTQ community due to his viewpoints. Another protester accused the senator of forfeiting his place in the community for his support of Israel.

Wiener has been an attendee of the Trans March every year since its inception in 2004. He was passing through Dolores Park to attend a trans-led Pride Shabbat service when the confrontation began. According to Wiener, the gathering involved extreme and hostile remarks, including references to ‘Israeli handlers.’

The California Senate leadership and LGBTQ lawmakers criticized the harassment, stressing that Wiener deserves respect and protection. Senate President Pro Tempore Monique Limón, along with other Democratic leaders, issued a statement supporting Wiener and highlighted his dedication to public service and LGBTQ advocacy.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie also condemned the language used against Wiener, describing it as targeted and antisemitic. He emphasized that hate should never be directed at community members.

Senator Wiener is currently a candidate in the November general election, aiming to secure a seat in the high-profile 11th Congressional District based in San Francisco. The race also includes San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, setting the stage for a contest between two Democrats.

During a separate incident, San Francisco police reported the arrest of five individuals related to charges of vandalism, obstruction, and assault. Two officers sustained minor injuries in this confrontation.
