LAPD evidence suggests David Anthony Burke, known as D4vd, impregnated a teenage girl and coerced her into an abortion at age 13. This occurred a year before she was allegedly murdered and dismembered. These details emerged in court, presented by Detective Corey Farell.
The court session, part of Burke’s preliminary hearing for murder and sex abuse charges, revealed a series of text messages and photos from his cellphone. Burke has pleaded not guilty. The texts and images, spanning from November 2023 to March 2025, illustrated discussions between Burke and the girl, Celeste Rivas Hernandez, about their sexual relationship, potential pregnancy, and an abortion scheduled for January 2024.
The materials showed the two discussing sexual interactions, a pregnancy, and a plan to live together, dubbed “Operation Awesome.” There were messages about a possible pregnancy and an abortion appointment. Photos included images of Hernandez naked or with Burke involved in sexual acts. Prosecutors say these photos constitute child sex material, which were not shown in court.
In January 2024, messages indicated discussion about a potential abortion. Burke asked, “wen u gonna get it done,” and Hernandez replied, “two days.” When Burke questioned if the child was his, Hernandez confirmed, “of course its yours David.”
Images and text messages displayed further evidence of their connection. A photo showed Hernandez’s hand with a tattoo of “David” in red ink. Prosecutors allege Burke amputated two of her fingers to hide the tattoo after allegedly killing her with a chainsaw.
Hernandez was last reported seen alive at Burke’s residence in April 2025. Prosecutors argue the murder followed her threat to expose their sexual relationship, which could damage Burke’s music career. Four days into the preliminary hearing, evidence has significant implications for Burke. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty. Prosecutors have not announced if they will pursue capital punishment.
Autopsy results showed Hernandez died from fatal stab wounds. Her remains were found decomposed in a car trunk months later. LAPD DNA expert Samantha Tosch confirmed DNA evidence matching Hernandez was found in Burke’s residence.
Burke’s defense raised questions about the autopsy findings, highlighting the decomposition of the body which made certain details ambiguous. Defense attorney Marilyn Bednarski questioned the medical examiner for over an hour, probing the possibility that Hernandez might have self-inflicted injuries or the argument involved a struggle. The autopsy found no “hesitation marks” typical of self-harm, indicating she likely didn’t inflict the wounds on herself.
The legal proceedings continue as the judge in Los Angeles County must determine if there is enough evidence for a trial.
