Six Flags Great America Plans Major Park Expansion with New Roller Coaster and Themed Area

Six Flags Great America has announced plans for its largest investment in the park in decades. The new addition, Camp Timber Trail, is set to open in 2027 and will include a new roller coaster and thematic area. This expansion represents one of the most significant investments since the Southwest Territory opened in 1996, according to Park President John Krajnak.

As the park celebrates its 50th anniversary, Krajnak described the announcement as a way of ‘looking forward.’ He stated, ‘It’s really special. I’m impressed with the investment we’re making. It’s substantial.’

Camp Timber Trail will be a family-oriented, woodland camp-themed area offering an immersive experience with interactive play and outdoor discovery. A new suspended family coaster, the Sky Hawk, will be the Midwest’s longest, tallest, and fastest of its kind, providing impressive views of the surrounding woodland landscape.

Additional attractions include the Trail Trotters animal trek and the Forest Grove Play Park, which features nature-inspired elements. Some classic rides will also be ‘reimagined.’ Sprocket Rockets becomes Chirp Chaser, Crazy Bus transforms into Wilderness Wagon, Yahoo River becomes Creek Cruiser, and Buzzy Beez returns as Bee Boppin’.

Krajnak noted additional theming enhancements for Camp Timber Trail, with themed dining, special treats, and exclusive merchandise available. Whether this project is a full rebranding of the Yukon Territory or a new section is still to be decided.

The initiative follows a merger with Cedar Fair Entertainment, which helped stabilize the Six Flags brand. This investment signals a positive future direction for the park. The project emphasizes memorable experiences and environment enhancement, promising new attractions each year.

Apart from Camp Timber Trail, improvements to the park’s environment are planned. These enhancements will cover landscapes, walkways, guest amenities, and facilities. Krajnak described this as the ‘first step in a multi-year transformation’ and stated the next 50 years begin here with Camp Timber Trail.
