Claim of New Autopsy Report
Recent social media posts claim that a new autopsy report for George Floyd reveals he died from a drug overdose, contradicting official conclusions. These claims are false.
Official Report Details
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office released a full autopsy report on June 3, 2020, and it has not changed since. The complete report concludes that Floyd died from cardiopulmonary arrest due to law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression.
Misleading Social Media Posts
Some social media users shared an image from the autopsy report’s second page, selectively highlighting details about drugs in Floyd’s system and claiming no life-threatening injuries were identified. These posts falsely imply a new revelation.
One tweet stated, “George Floyd full autopsy released,” and claimed high levels of drugs beyond initially reported fentanyl. It received significant engagement, exceeding 48,000 likes and 16,000 shares.
Confirmation of Report’s Validity
Carolyn Marinan, spokesperson for Hennepin County, confirmed no amendments have been made since the report’s finalization on June 1, 2020. John Stiles from the Minnesota Attorney General’s office reiterated the report as unchanged.
Trial and Legal Outcomes
During Derek Chauvin’s trial, defense focused on Floyd’s drug presence. Chauvin was found guilty and sentenced to over 22 years in prison. Three other officers involved were also sentenced.
Expert Opinions
Prosecution expert witnesses concluded Floyd’s death was not a drug overdose. Independent experts support this and highlight underlying medical problems and drug use did not alter the homicide conclusion.
Experts further clarified the absence of significant bruising or neck damage does not negate asphyxia, explaining such findings only show a lack of conspicuous signs on the body.
Conclusion
The misleading posts demonstrate limitations of autopsies alone in diagnosing asphyxiation, according to Stiles.
