Sophie Cunningham, a prominent player for the Indiana Fever, received an unexpected reaction on her birthday following comments about transgender athletes in women’s sports. The controversy has grown online, drawing attention from fans and sports analysts.
Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve added to the discourse by wearing a “Trans Kids belong” shirt at a game against the Fever. The unfolding situation continues to stir debate.
Despite no formal action from the WNBA, Cunningham’s name is now banned from the independent r/WNBA subreddit. The forum prohibits words like “Cunningham,” “Sophie,” and “SC” to prevent trolling and unwanted comments. This subreddit has no official link to the WNBA.
Reddit user Adventurous_Hope_101 shared a private message from a moderator explaining the name ban. They stated it aims to reduce trolling; if users wish to discuss Cunningham, they are advised to use other subreddits.
We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to bring out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W,” the moderator explained.
When the user questioned the ban, the moderator threatened expulsion from the subreddit for continued complaints.
You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs,” the moderator advised.
Cunningham’s comments may lead to further responses from the WNBA. League team presidents recently discussed the transgender eligibility policy after two former NBA players entered the 2027 WNBA draft.
