South Carolina prosecutors are firmly opposing Alex Murdaugh’s request to transfer his trial to Charleston. They argue that the defense’s stance of “Charleston or bust” poses logistical challenges and unreasonable expenses.
In their recent court response, the state urged the court to reject Murdaugh’s proposal to designate Charleston as the sole alternative venue. Although Charleston is celebrated for its cultural and economic significance, state officials highlighted the difficulties in managing a high-profile trial there.
Murdaugh’s trial is set to begin in April 2027. Prosecutors emphasized logistical concerns such as traffic congestion and the scarcity of parking in downtown Charleston. These issues are exacerbated during busy times like the spring tourist season and Masters week, which could significantly inflate local hotel prices.
Furthermore, heavy spring storms and king tides often lead to flooding in the downtown area, making it less suitable for a trial of this size.
The defense requested a venue change due to the public attention from Murdaugh’s first trial. Prosecutors, however, asserted that moving the trial to a county bordering Colleton County contradicts this rationale. They also noted their openness to considering alternatives like Spartanburg, York, or Florence rather than relocating merely due to media coverage.
Murdaugh’s defense team, in their bid to move the trial, cited significant local publicity, family connections, and alleged courthouse issues in Colleton County. A pretrial hearing for Murdaugh is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. in the Lexington County Courthouse.
