The San Antonio Spurs faced an unsettling incident after their Game 4 loss in the NBA Finals. NBA star Victor Wembanyama was hit by an egg thrown by New York Knicks fans while the Spurs returned to their hotel.
Footage on social media showed the egg targeting Wembanyama as security guided him into a New York City hotel. This is part of a series of controversial actions by Knicks fans recently.
The outcome of San Antonio’s Game 3 win extended beyond the arena. Social media videos appeared to show altercations between Knicks fans and Spurs supporters. In some cases, Spurs fans had their jerseys forcibly removed, prompting Wembanyama to speak out against the discord.
“We can’t forget it’s a game,” he stated. “I am all for passion, but with respect for each other. It’s unacceptable.”
ESPN host Mike Greenberg shared similar views following Game 4. He criticized the behavior of those attacking Spurs fans, emphasizing the shame they bring upon themselves.
“If you’re throwing eggs or harming people wearing Spurs jerseys, you are a disgrace to yourself and everyone around you,” Greenberg said.
The aftermath of Game 3 included violence at a New York City watch party. Several fights occurred near Bryant Park in Manhattan. The New York Police Department reported 21 arrests — 13 for disorderly conduct and eight for assaulting officers, possessing weapons, and menacing. The disorderly conduct charges resulted in release.
This year marks the Knicks’ first NBA Finals appearance since 1999, with no championships since 1973. The 2026 Finals move to San Antonio for Game 5, with Game 6 set to return to New York if needed.
