Stockard Channing Embraces a Quiet Life in the UK

Stockard Channing, known for her role in ‘Grease,’ finds contentment in a quiet lifestyle away from the limelight. She moved to London shortly before the COVID pandemic, a decision influenced by the death of her long-time partner, Daniel Gilham, in 2014.

In an essay for The Sunday Times, Channing expressed her satisfaction living in solitude. “I’ve lived alone since losing Daniel and I’m happy being a recluse,” she wrote. Before Gilham, she had been married four times, each relationship marking a different phase in her life. Reflecting on her past, she likened her rebellion against traditional norms to her ‘Grease’ character, Rizzo.

Channing, now 82, acknowledged that Gilham’s death profoundly affected her, describing it as having a delayed impact. Her lifestyle change coincided with moving from Maine as she faced a shifting personal life and the political climate during Donald Trump’s second presidential run.

Channing reminisced about her role as Abbey Bartlet on ‘The West Wing,’ which began in 1999. She recalled the show’s portrayal of political integrity in contrast to today’s political environment. Aaron Sorkin, the show’s creator, once mentioned he based Abbey’s character on Channing herself, a remark that caught her off guard during their first meeting.

Nowadays, Channing’s daily routine starts at 7 a.m. when her dog wakes her. She enjoys her mornings with coffee and journaling, reflecting on life in the comfort of her bed, leaving only for necessities. Her mornings are unrushed, embracing simplicity.

Exercise is part of her daily life, although she admits playing hooky is her favorite exercise activity. Lunch marks her first meal of the day. When cooking doesn’t go as planned, her dog is the beneficiary.

Despite owning designer clothes from the past, Channing doesn’t prioritize fashion. She sees herself as genuine, not driven by celebrity image expectations. “I’m just me, take it or leave it,” she stated.

Her fans span generations, each knowing her for different iconic roles.
