A suspect in the murder of five individuals near Portland, Oregon, has died in a suspected suicide. Benjamin Charles Parker, 36, was found in a vehicle in Enumclaw, Washington, authorities reported.
The bodies of five victims were discovered on Saturday in a home near Forest Grove, Oregon, approximately 25 miles west of Portland. Washington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Parker was identified as the suspect in this case.
“Through their investigation, they believed that Parker was in Enumclaw, WA. Officers from the Enumclaw Police Department located Parker’s vehicle and found him deceased inside. It is believed he died by suicide,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The Enumclaw Police Department found Parker deceased behind a Safeway grocery store, connected to the investigation in Forest Grove.
Sheriff Caprice Massey requested anyone with information about the property or its residents to assist investigators.
Authorities assured there was no threat to the public but have not determined Parker’s connection to the victims or the motive behind the murders. It remains unclear how investigators connected Parker to the crime.
On Saturday, a vehicle fire led authorities to the scene where they found the remains of the victims and several domestic animals. Details about the victims, including their ages or genders, have not been disclosed. Detective Shannon Wilde stated that identifying the victims was ongoing due to the complexity of the crime scene.
Detective Wilde explained the logistical challenges of handling a crime scene with multiple deaths.
“Any time you have one person deceased, let alone five, that’s a logistical challenge,” Wilde said.
Sheriff Caprice Massey reiterated the need for information from those familiar with the environment or individuals involved. She highlighted the complexity of this case as unprecedented in her 22 years of service.
A dozen law enforcement agencies are participating in this ongoing investigation. Authorities have emphasized that there is no known public threat.
