Tennessee Star Linebacker Faces NCAA Suspension

The Tennessee Volunteers are experiencing a challenging offseason after the recent dismissal of five-star edge-rusher transfer Chaz Coleman, formerly of Penn State. Now, the team faces additional setbacks with news surrounding star linebacker Arion Carter. The NCAA suspended Carter for multiple games, impacting his prospects as a 2027 NFL draft hopeful.

According to Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News, Carter received a two-game suspension due to NCAA rules violations. The issue arose when Carter returned to college after his agent had financed a $427 flight to an NFL pre-draft training facility. Despite Carter repaying the agent for the flight cost, the NCAA labeled the payment an “impermissible benefit.”

Carter initially declared for the 2026 NFL draft but retracted his decision following an injury requiring surgical intervention. In this period, his agent paid for the flight, leading to the current predicament. The NCAA underscored that its regulations prohibit student-athletes from engaging agents for NFL draft pursuits if they are to return to college sports.

The suspension has direct implications for Tennessee as Carter will miss the games against Furman on September 5 and Georgia Tech on September 12. Without Carter, who had a standout season earning second-team All-SEC honors, the Volunteers must adapt their strategy.

The NCAA rules state that when violations occur, student-athletes are deemed ineligible until reinstatement stipulations are met, which may involve repayment or partial withholding from competitions.

Despite the issue, losing Carter temporarily is not expected to significantly affect the overall outlook for Tennessee’s season, though the absence of a key player remains a concern. Head coach Josh Huepel expressed disagreement with the NCAA’s ruling concerning Carter’s suspension, highlighting Carter’s health-driven decision and potential graduation in public health with Dean’s List recognition. The team stands united with Carter and anticipates his participation in training camp.
