Texas law enforcement reported a significant breakthrough on Wednesday, announcing the arrest of a suspect in connection with a planned violent attack targeting the state’s capitol in Austin. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed that it had received “credible information” leading to the arrest.
A tipoff received on Tuesday night set the rapid response in motion. As a result, Benny Caldera Jr., 40, was apprehended early Wednesday morning at his residence in Converse. DPS has charged him with a felony for making terroristic threats against a public servant, and he is currently detained at Bexar County Jail.
The DPS released a statement outlining the measures taken. “DPS leadership notified Texas State Legislators of the threat and arrest earlier today,” it said. “The Texas Capitol remains open for regular operating hours. DPS will continue to have an increased security presence at the Texas Capitol to protect all employees, visitors, and state officials.” The DPS emphasized that details remain limited due to the ongoing investigation.
“Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol. Thank you, [Texas DPS], for a job well done,” the state’s Governor, Greg Abbott, shared on social media platform X.
While law enforcement agencies continue their investigation, the intended target remains unspecified. Collaboration between Texas DPS and the FBI ensured a swift response, with the FBI deferring all comments to DPS.
This situation remains active, with further updates anticipated.
