Texas Suffers Troubling Loss Against Florida

1 day ago 0

Texas faced another challenging defeat over the weekend, losing 27-24 at home to an unranked Florida squad. The Longhorns, who began their season with a perfect 4-0 record, including a significant triumph over then-top-ranked Ohio State, have now experienced two consecutive narrow defeats. Their earlier loss was to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, which added to their recent struggles.

The loss to Florida is especially troubling because the Gators played without their starting quarterback and leading wide receiver. Arch Manning, a key player for Texas, contributed to this setback. Manning completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and secured one touchdown. However, a late fumble by Manning quashed any hopes of a comeback, further tarnishing Texas’ performance.

This defeat has also had a significant impact on Texas’ prospects of making it to the College Football Playoff (CFP). According to Polymarket, Texas’ chances have plummeted to 36%, a steep drop from over 70% before the Florida game.

Earlier in the season, the Longhorns enjoyed victories over Ohio State and at then-No. 14 Tennessee, along with decisive wins over Texas State and UTSA. Despite this strong start, the recent losses are proving costly. Texas now has an overall record of 4-2, with a 1-2 record in SEC play, and they have fallen to No. 19 in the AP Top 25, having previously claimed the No. 1 position.

The losses, particularly against unranked conference opponents, present challenges for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns. The path to the CFP now appears daunting, as their remaining schedule is unforgiving. They will soon face No. 7 Ole Miss, a formidable team with a 5-1 record, followed by games against Mississippi State and Missouri on the road, and then against LSU, Arkansas, and Texas A&M.

Among their remaining six games, five are against SEC opponents with winning records, and three are away games. This presents a daunting challenge, with little room for error, highlighting why the Florida game was particularly damaging. If Texas misses the 12-team playoff, the repercussions could be significant, especially given the high expectations for Sarkisian and Manning prior to this season. The inability to recover from back-to-back losses and miss the CFP could pose a significant hurdle for the program.
