Kevin Brandt, a basketball dad from Leipsic, OH, often pays admission fees higher than those for NBA games. He understands the business side of AAU basketball and accepts what he and his wife committed to. Their daughter plays for one of the leading travel teams in the Midwest.

Brandt’s visit to the Spooky Nook complex in Hamilton was puzzling. The weekend’s expenses raised concerns, prompting him to question the system.

Costly Experience at Spooky Nook Complex

Brandt shared on social media that attending his daughter’s tournament, Select Showcase, cost his family $260. The typical $70-$90 weekend pass was absent in Hamilton. Instead, the family needed to purchase admission for two separate tournaments held at the same venue: the Select Events Super Showcase and the Midwest Summer Classic. Both events were under the same organizer.

“They told us these were ‘separate’ events,” Brandt explained, detailing the $120 fee per event plus $5 daily parking fees.

The family opted for a long drive over expensive local hotel rates exceeding $300. Additional costs of $60 were incurred when other family members joined for a day.

Attempts to contact Spooky Nook’s senior management for clarity on setting prices and fees have been unsuccessful.

Broader Concerns Among AAU Parents

The situation in Ohio reflects growing concerns among AAU parents over escalating costs. Mookie Edmond, another AAU parent, recounted her family’s weekend in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where a $90 weekend pass was available. Despite experiencing no sympathy, she maintains her commitment to investing in her child’s sports career, stating in a Facebook video, “At the end of the day, we are going to invest in our child.”

Edmond expressed doubts after spending nearly $1,500 on travel expenses, admission, and accommodation. “I’m over here scratching my head,” she remarked to her friends on Facebook.
