The Transformation of Universal Orlando’s Lost Continent

More than 25 years after it became a staple of Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure, the Lost Continent is entering a phased closure. Demolition work on the site has commenced. A local news helicopter captured footage showing an excavator next to debris.

A Universal Orlando spokesperson informed Fox News Digital that attractions and venues within the Lost Continent will close gradually to make way for a new themed area.

This also means that Mythos Restaurant will close in 2027.

The Lost Continent, known for its mythology-inspired architecture and storytelling, opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999. It offered a blend of fantasy adventure and technological effects.

The area hosted fan-favorite attractions, such as the Dueling Dragons roller coasters, later renamed Dragon Challenge when The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was introduced. This ride was renowned for its synchronized dispatches and near-miss elements.

Poseidon’s Fury also drew crowds with its water tunnel effects and live actors.

Over the past 15 years, changes have occurred. In 2010, the Dueling Dragons became Dragon Challenge to coincide with the Harry Potter expansion. In 2017, that attraction closed to make way for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad live show ended in 2018, and Poseidon’s Fury shuttered in 2023.

Mythos Restaurant will continue operating until 2027, according to the phased closure plan.

Aside from Lost Continent changes, Universal temporarily closed the Horror Make-Up Show for preparations for a “reimagined experience” blending classic and modern horror themes.

Hogwarts Castle, another area fixture, has undergone maintenance in recent years.

In 2027, Universal will introduce Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a new roller coaster based on the famous movies.

Reactions to the Lost Continent’s closure have been mixed. Some visitors welcomed the changes, citing long-closed attractions. Others expressed nostalgia, remembering it as a favorite part of their experience.
