Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Five Lives in Ohio

In Powell, Ohio, a tragic incident claimed the lives of five people in a river. The incident unfolded when some members of a group tried to help a struggling swimmer, according to authorities.

Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer shared details during a news conference. The events began when a motorist called 911. The call was prompted by the sighting of a frightened child running near the road. This child was associated with the group gathered by the Scioto River in Powell, a suburb of Columbus, on Sunday.

The situation escalated when one person entered the river to swim. Sheriff Balzer noted, “And that’s when the tragedy started to occur.” Others entered the water to assist the struggling swimmer but found themselves in difficulty.

Rescue teams were deployed to the site. On Sunday, crews discovered two women in the water. Despite efforts, both women were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, Sheriff Balzer confirmed. By Monday, the bodies of three men were also recovered from the river, according to Tracy Whited, spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.
