Travis Kelce’s Commitment to Chiefs Fueled by Relationship with Mahomes

Retirement rumors have surrounded Kansas City Chiefs standout Travis Kelce in recent years. At 36, he is already recognized as one of the NFL’s greatest tight ends. However, in March, Kelce confirmed his decision to play at least one more season. He signed a one-year, $12 million contract to return to Kansas City for 2026.

A major factor in this decision is his bond with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Their connection has been evident during training camp.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kelce praised Mahomes’ impressive performance in camp as the quarterback continues recovering from a torn ACL and LCL. “Everybody knows I love that guy,” Kelce said. “That’s a brother to me. I’m incredibly proud of how he has managed adversity from last year to now. We still have about a month before the first game, but if you see him here, he’s loving the game, playing at a high level, and not dwelling on the knee. He’s excelling and leading us.”

Mahomes sustained both ACL and LCL tears during a Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers last season, ending his season prematurely. The Chiefs lost their next three games, finishing with a 6-11 record, their worst under Mahomes’ leadership.

Approaching 31 and dealing with the most severe injury of his career, questions arose about Mahomes’ readiness for Week 1 and the potential for lingering effects into the 2026 season. Yet, throughout camp, both coaches and teammates have praised his performance, showing no signs of decline. All indicators suggest Mahomes will be prepared when the Chiefs face the Denver Broncos on Monday, September 14, at Arrowhead Stadium.
