Trump Considers Withdrawing Attorney General Nomination Amid Senate Dispute

President Donald Trump announced he might withdraw acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s nomination for a full-time position. This move aims to avoid giving in to Senate Republicans’ demands related to a tax audit immunity deal favorable to Trump and his family. Negotiations broke down, delaying a committee vote to advance Blanche’s nomination. Trump resisted pressure from Republican Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, who criticized the settlement of Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS as self-serving.

The Justice Department appeared open to an agreement with the senators, but the White House stood firm to support Blanche, a loyal former personal attorney to Trump. Trump suggested on social media that he might withdraw Blanche’s nomination and resubmit it after Cornyn and Tillis leave office next year.

Senators Cornyn and Tillis, who oppose the nomination without written guarantees on the settlement, demanded clarity about a tax claim and a scrapped plan for a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” meant for Trump allies. With all Democratic senators against it, losing one Republican vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee could jeopardize Blanche’s confirmation. It remains uncertain if Blanche has enough support from the full chamber.

Cornyn expressed that concerns about the settlement were not limited to himself and Tillis. Lawmakers demand written confirmation that the “Anti-Weaponization Fund” is off the table. Skepticism persists as Trump still supports the idea.

Another contention is the settlement’s audit immunity provision, preventing the U.S. government from scrutinizing Trump and his organization’s tax exams. Cornyn and Tillis urged for changes to apply only to current audits, not future ones.

Cornyn, who lost his seat after Trump opposed him in a primary, and Tillis, not seeking re-election, remain vocal critics. Although politically embarrassing, pulling Blanche’s nomination might not impact DOJ management significantly. Blanche, also confirmed as deputy attorney general, can continue leading the department effectively.
