Melania Trump’s Views on Public Performances
President Donald Trump has spoken about several aspects of his public appearances that his wife, Melania, reportedly dislikes. During a rally in Las Vegas, Trump revealed that Melania has criticized his dance moves and his tendency to imitate a weightlifter in speeches addressing transgender athletes. He noted that she considers these actions as not ‘presidential.’
“She hates it when I imitate no men in women’s sports,” Trump told the crowd. “She hates it when I do ‘the weightlifter…. She said it’s not presidential.”
Melania’s disapproval of some of Trump’s more theatrical moments isn’t new. The president has previously mentioned her aversion to his dancing and impressions, referring to her as “a very classy person.”
Thoughts on Trump’s Dancing
One of Trump’s most recognizable rally staples has been his dancing, especially to “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People during campaign events. According to Trump, Melania feels the dancing doesn’t align with the dignified image of a president.
Earlier this year, Trump shared that Melania asked if former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, an “elegant fellow,” would have acted similarly in public. Trump joked about his wife’s comments:
“She hates when I dance,” he remarked during a January address. “She actually said, ‘Can you imagine FDR dancing?'”
Trump repeated a similar story at the California Republican Party fall convention, noting that Melania labeled his dancing as “not presidential.” Trump’s response highlighted the audience’s enthusiasm for his performances:
“I said I have a problem because everybody wants..They are screaming ‘dance, dance, dance,'” Trump explained.
Melania’s Views on ‘The Weightlifter’ Impression
Trump also recounted how Melania objects to a gesture he makes about transgender athletes in women’s sports. He uses exaggerated movements to mimic a weightlifter, which Melania apparently finds unsuitable for a president.
Trump said Melania “hates when I do ‘the weightlifter.'” He fondly narrated:
“Darling, please, the weightlifting is terrible,” she reportedly told him, to which he replied, “But I did become president.”
He shared this exchange during the 2023 California speech where Melania allegedly stated: “It’s not presidential.”
Feedback on Public Appearance
This isn’t the first instance where Trump has detailed Melania’s feedback. During the 2023 California Republican Party event, he recounted that she criticized his appearance on camera after an interview:
“You didn’t look good, too much light,” she reportedly remarked.
Trump’s Rally Style as a Political Trademark
Despite Melania’s critiques, Trump’s dance and hand gestures remain key elements of his campaign style, often prompting encouragement from his supporters. Although Melania typically maintains a low public profile and rarely comments on private matters, Trump frequently emphasizes her role in advising him on his public image and presentation. He has chosen to continue these rally traditions, arguing they are popular with attendees.
