President Donald Trump has requested the Supreme Court to reconsider the birthright citizenship case. This move follows reports of billboards promoting birth plans at hospitals in the U.S., seen from Mexico.
In a Truth Social post, Trump highlighted the prevalence of “signs and billboards” near the U.S.-Mexico border. These advertisements reportedly promote deliveries starting at $4,000, which Trump referred to as a “SCAM” that profits billions illegally, granting citizenship to those who can pay.
Trump urged the Supreme Court to revisit the case after it recently opposed his attempt to change the right established by the 14th Amendment through executive order. He described the court’s decision as detrimental to America.
The “scam” Trump pointed to involves an advertising campaign by Mission Regional Medical Center (MRMC) in South Texas. Governor Greg Abbott stated the campaign targets illegal immigrants by offering birth packages ensuring babies born would be American citizens.
Abbott has instructed the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to investigate MRMC for potential violations. The adverts allegedly target foreign nationals in Mexico, promoting deliveries from $3,950 for a natural birth and C-sections from $5,525, as reported by Fox News.
“Birth tourism exploits the hospitality of the U.S. and Texas,” Abbott stated. He calls for HHSC to probe the hospital for any breaches of state law and contractual commitments.
MRMC acknowledged its role in the advertising campaign but denied supporting unlawful activities. Trump maintains that American citizenship should not be purchasable, terming the practice illegal.
Republicans, including Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles, have labeled birth tourism a significant issue. Ogles has proposed legislation to prevent pregnant immigrants and visitors, not related to U.S. citizens, from entering the country.
