Trump’s Transformation of the White House Rose Garden

The White House Rose Garden, traditionally known for its blooming roses, has seen significant changes under President Donald Trump. Statues of some of America’s founders now grace the space, adding a new visual element to the historic area located near the Oval Office. The restructuring involved replacing the lush lawn with a white stone patio, giving the space a look similar to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

The statues include notable figures like Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. George Lundeen, a sculptor from Loveland, Colorado, gifted the bronze statue of Jefferson. His depiction shows Jefferson signing the Declaration of Independence. A fifth statue, “Freedom’s Charge,” features Revolutionary War soldiers and adds to the collection.

Lundeen, who had earlier crafted the Jefferson sculpture, sent it to Trump for display during America’s 250th Independence Day celebrations. Despite delays, Trump admired the piece so much he decided to place it in the Rose Garden. In a recorded message to Lundeen, Trump expressed his appreciation for the statue.

Details about the other statues are minimal. The Washington statue is a loan from Harlan Crow, a Texas-based real estate tycoon. The Franklin and Hamilton statues came from anonymous donors. Trump’s fondness for statues stems from his ambition to beautify the White House, as stated by spokesperson Davis Ingle. These efforts are part of Trump’s broader plan to leave a legacy in Washington.

Beyond the White House, Trump has commissioned statues for the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and a proposed National Garden of American Heroes near the National Mall. This project aims to showcase 250 notable Americans, although it faces legal challenges from preservation groups.

Trump’s passion for art extends to his personal properties, where he displays significant pieces like a bronze statue depicting him after a 2024 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. This statue, also by Lundeen, was a gift from Anthony Constantino, a Republican congressional candidate.

Historically, the White House serves as an art gallery with works such as the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington. During Trump’s presidency, a piece by Isamu Noguchi was installed near the Rose Garden, marking the first inclusion of an Asian American artist in the collection. Previously, Michelle Obama enhanced the Old Family Dining Room with a painting by African American artist Alma Thomas, diversifying the collection.
