Turmoil at CBS’s ’60 Minutes’ as Scott Pelley Criticizes Leadership

3 weeks ago 0

Recent unrest has surfaced within CBS’s renowned “60 Minutes.” Veteran correspondent Scott Pelley has voiced significant criticism towards CBS News head Bari Weiss during a meeting with the new executive producer, Nick Bilton.

According to reports, Pelley criticized both Weiss and the new producer’s qualifications during an introductory team meeting. Status, a media news outlet, provided a comprehensive account of the recorded discussion. Weiss did not attend the meeting.

During the 10 a.m. meeting, Pelley questioned the dismissals of Bilton’s predecessor, Tanya Simon, along with correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Pelley reportedly described Bilton’s qualifications as “slender” and accused Weiss of damaging the show’s legacy and making detrimental changes to “CBS Evening News.”

Bilton defended Weiss’s commitment to the show, stating, “Bari loves this institution.” Pelley countered with, “She’s murdering ‘60 minutes.’”

“She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and she’s doing exactly that,” he argued.

CBS spokespersons did not immediately provide comments. However, an inside source disclosed that Weiss and Bilton attempted to connect with Pelley to affirm his importance to the show amid recent upheavals.

During the heated meeting, Pelley’s voice reportedly shook with emotion, and reports noted staff applauded him multiple times. Despite this, Bilton held his ground, expressing confidence in his capabilities as a longtime journalist.

The meeting occurred shortly after Weiss circulated a memo promoting a “new approach” for “60 Minutes.” The memo, co-signed by CBS News president Tom Cibrowski, outlined a vision to expand the show’s role and maintain its ambitious and fearless nature. They praised Bilton for embodying the original spirit of “60 Minutes.”

Pelley emphasized his disapproval of recent personnel changes. Bilton insisted that he wasn’t intimidated by the proceedings and remained steadfast in his role.
