Recently, all U.S. Air Force bombers stationed in the United Kingdom were sent back to their home bases in the United States. This move came amid suspicions of a terror plot that might involve Iran. According to a U.S. official, approximately twelve B-1 bombers were among those relocated from the Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Fairford in Gloucestershire, England. RAF Fairford is known as the sole European forward operating location for U.S. heavy bombers.
“We can acknowledge now that all U.S. bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States,” said a department official.
The Pentagon stressed that the relocation does not affect the readiness of the bomber fleet. The U.S. bombers remain fully capable of executing long-range strike missions from the continental United States at any required moment.
The Air Force personnel operating the B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s maintain their readiness to carry out global precision strike missions, projecting power anywhere in the world when necessary.
RAF Fairford serves as a crucial European base for U.S. heavy strategic bombers and has supported various military operations, including those targeting locations in Iran.
Following recent events, U.K. authorities announced that three suspicious vehicles with fuel accelerants were found near RAF Fairford. Although no improvised explosive devices were discovered, authorities recovered a significant amount of petrol. Investigations into potential links to Iranian state proxies have commenced. A British-Iranian dual national was arrested on suspicions of preparing terrorist activities.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that evidence points to foreign actor involvement in the plot. Moreover, President Donald Trump linked the incident to Iran, highlighting ongoing tensions since February.
Six individuals were apprehended concerning the incident, including five British nationals in their early twenties. While all suspects have since been released on bail, the investigation persists.
Officials acknowledged the surprise reaction to the release of the five British nationals but emphasized that the decision was based on experience and a careful exercise of policing powers.
