UMass Dartmouth Football Player Killed in Providence Stabbing Incident

An incident in Providence, Rhode Island resulted in the death of a University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football player, with a second player wounded. Police have charged a fellow student with murder following the stabbing that occurred early on a Saturday.

The altercation began when freshman running back Marvins Antoine, along with other team members, visited a nightclub called Mezzo Lounge after a game loss to Framingham State. The conflict at the club moved to a nearby Wendy’s parking lot just after midnight, where two players were stabbed.

Marvins Antoine, aged 18, suffered fatal stab wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital. Kensley Macean, a 19-year-old freshman defensive back, sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his head, neck, and arm.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez announced that 19-year-old UMass Dartmouth student Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze was arrested and charged with murder. Eze, not part of the football team, was detained on campus by university authorities and is awaiting transfer to Rhode Island.

There was an altercation between a female and some of the victims that were in line. And then the altercation moved over to the parking lot of the Wendy’s but we have no indication that they knew each other.

Perez noted that Flock cameras in the area helped track Eze’s escape vehicle, facilitating his capture on the campus.

UMass Dartmouth is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Providence. In a statement, Chancellor Mark Fuller expressed condolences and support for Antoine’s and Macean’s families, highlighting the loss felt by the university community.

Antoine, a graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, was remembered fondly by former teammates. Orlando Delgado, a high school teammate, recalled Antoine’s aspirations to play in the NFL and described him as a role model. Delgado’s mother, Ashania Chambers, and another teammate, Xavier Gracia, emphasized Antoine’s positive character and his impact on those around him.
