Millions of Social Security beneficiaries will soon receive their September payments. Over 70 million Americans depend on Social Security for various benefits, including retirement, spousal, survivor, and disability payments. The Social Security Administration (SSA) usually schedules payments based on birthdates. This week, on Wednesday, September 23, those born between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive their retirement, spousal, and survivor payments.
However, there are exceptions. Individuals who started receiving payments before May 1997, or those who get both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), typically get their payments at the start of the month instead of based on birthdate. The SSA advises beneficiaries to wait three working days after the payment date before contacting them if there’s a delay.
Your Social Security amount is influenced by factors like the type of benefit. For retirees, the amount depends on their earnings history and the age when they start claiming benefits. For instance, those earning at or above the maximum subject to Social Security taxes can receive a maximum monthly benefit of $2,969 at age 62, $4,152 at full retirement age, and $5,181 if benefits start at age 70. In reality, most do not receive this maximum. Recent data shows the average retired worker received $2,085.98 per month in July 2026, while the average for all beneficiaries was $1,940.08.
Retired Worker: Average $2,085.98 per month; maximum $5,181 at age 70.
Spousal Benefit: Average $986.53 per month; maximum $2,076.
Survivor Benefit: Average $1,634.61 per month; maximum potentially $5,181 for a surviving spouse, depending on the deceased worker’s benefit.
SSI: Average $736.54/month; maximum federal payment $994 for an individual.
Payment Dates for October
Next month’s payment dates are as follows:
- SSI: October 1, 2026
- Social Security: October 2, 2026 for those receiving benefits before May 1997 or who get both Social Security and SSI
- Retired Workers, Spouses, and Survivors: Birthdate from 1st-10th will be paid on October 14, from 11th-20th on October 21, and from 21st-31st on October 28
October is significant for beneficiaries as the SSA will announce the new cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. COLA prevents benefits from losing purchasing power due to inflation. The expected increase ranges from 3.4% to 3.6%, higher than the 2026 adjustment of 2.8%. The announcement will be made on October 14.
