Understanding the Midwest’s Cultural Essence

The potential Democratic contender for the presidency isn’t a socialist. Yet, he shows a folksy charm and strong moral values. Recently, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear spoke at Cindy Holscher’s campaign event in Kansas.

The Nation, established by abolitionists in 1865, has always been a critical, independent, and progressive voice in political and cultural discourse.

Since moving to New York, I’ve noticed people’s disinterest when I mention my education at Indiana University. Many educated on the East Coast, like those from Yale or NYU, often can’t locate Indiana on a map. New Yorkers have varied perceptions of the Midwest.

Indiana, my home, shares a border with Kentucky and many cultural traits. Traditional foods like fried chicken, gravy, and corn are common in Indiana, especially in the southern regions. Growing up in Indiana during Mike Pence’s tenure, I experienced life in a politically conservative state.

Living in the Midwest brings unique experiences. While my upbringing was complex, I assert that understanding this region requires firsthand experience. The diversity here means it’s home to many different people.
