US Olympic Hockey Teams Celebrated at White House After Historic Wins

The US Olympic hockey teams recently celebrated significant achievements. Both the men’s and women’s teams secured gold medals, marking a historic moment. These victories over Canada were highlighted by the men’s team’s overtime win with a golden goal by Jack Hughes, and the outstanding performance of Connor Hellebuyck, who made 41 saves. In a significant development, Team USA’s celebrated goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck, has made headlines beyond the Olympic glory. Rumors that Hellebuyck requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets have been confirmed. At 33, Hellebuyck has spent his NHL career with the Jets, securing the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender three times. Despite this, the Jets’ decline last season prompted the team’s executive vice president, Kevin Cheveldayoff, to entertain trade offers.

“Certainly, as an organization we’re going to listen,” Cheveldayoff stated, referencing Hellebuyck’s passionate end-of-year press conference and private exit meetings.

Hellebuyck publicly acknowledged his trade request on Thursday. In a statement shared by his agent, he explained his decision: “I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options. With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request. My position has not changed. Moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.”

Since his debut with the Jets in the 2015-16 season, Hellebuyck has established himself as a premier netminder. Following his announcement, Cheveldayoff released a statement acknowledging Hellebuyck’s contributions and expressing respect for him while confirming ongoing discussions about the situation.

Hellebuyck’s remarkable performance during the men’s gold medal game against Canada at the 2025 Olympics in Milan was pivotal in securing the US victory. This achievement led to President Trump announcing during the State of the Union address that Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
