USC Linebacker Suspended for Dangerous Hit on Oregon Quarterback

The USC Trojans have suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game following his dangerous late hit on Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. The incident occurred during the Ducks’ 41-20 victory over the Trojans, specifically in the second quarter.

Moore was scrambling and appeared ready to slide after securing enough yardage for a first down. Stephens, however, executed a late hit, targeting Moore’s head. This resulted in an ejection due to targeting violations. Moore had to be stretchered off the field, as Stephens engaged in celebratory actions right after the collision.

USC announced the suspension on Sunday. Head coach Lincoln Riley issued a statement, saying, “Desman’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character. He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences of his actions, and will learn from this.” Riley also expressed wishes for Moore’s full recovery.

Stephens addressed the situation, expressing remorse for his conduct. He stated, “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game. Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable. Regardless of what was going through my mind at the time, there is no justification for smiling or celebrating while another player receives medical attention.”

Stephens acknowledged his full responsibility and expressed hopes for Moore’s recovery, emphasizing that his behavior was not representative of him or the USC program.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning labeled the hit as “disgusting.” Moore’s teammates, including wide receiver Evan Stewart, were visibly concerned and checked on him as he was carted off the field.

Stephens is set to miss the upcoming game against Washington on Saturday.
