Arrest Leads to Regret for Trump Voter
A Texas businessman who supported President Donald Trump is expressing regret following the arrest of his Venezuelan fiancée. Yasmin Suarez Reyes was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Despite having entered the country legally, Reyes was arrested while traveling to a furniture convention.
John Gannon, 75, shared his disappointment with CBS News, stating, “They’re picking up law-abiding citizens. They’re destroying families, jobs.” Gannon had previously voted for Trump but now regrets his decision.
Details of Yasmin Suarez Reyes’ Legal Status
Suarez Reyes entered the U.S. in October 2023 under the Visa Waiver Program, which allows citizens of participating countries, like Spain, to visit for up to 90 days without a visa. Reyes initially entered legally but overstayed her admission after applying for asylum in January 2024. This application enabled her to acquire a work permit and a driver’s license in Texas.
Her arrest occurred in July during a trip to a furniture convention in Las Vegas. Gannon recounted that ICE agents detained Reyes without explanation, causing distress and confusion for both.
Increasing Airport Arrests
Criticism from immigration lawyers and advocates is mounting as ICE targets immigrants with uncertain legal status, like Suarez Reyes’ pending asylum application. Such situations leave immigrants vulnerable to detention because pending applications do not grant full legal status.
The Department of Homeland Security maintains that overstaying a visa can lead to detention, even if an individual is awaiting a legal decision. The federal government’s approach has been criticized for prioritizing easy detentions to increase numbers.
Impact on Families
Gannon expressed frustration with the administration’s methods. He believes in targeting criminals but advocates leaving families untouched. Gannon, who owns numerous billboards across the U.S. and businesses in Mexico, regrets his vote for Trump, calling the situation a “fiasco.”
Suarez Reyes continues to be held at the Montgomery Processing Center in Conroe, Texas, as her removal proceedings are underway.
