Virginia’s Rifle Ban Sparks Debate

3 days ago 0

The recent op-ed by Stephen Gutowski dated July 29 discusses Virginia’s ban on AR-style rifles. Gutowski points out an unexpected surge in sales before the ban was enacted in July. This spike indicates the law might have unintended consequences.

Gutowski predicts that the ban might not hold up legally. He expects the Supreme Court to invalidate the ban within a year. This prediction parallels concerns expressed by several justices regarding similar laws in Connecticut and Illinois.

The court’s readiness to address this issue highlights significant reservations about such bans. The legal challenge roots back to the 2008 landmark case, District of Columbia v. Heller. This case established that the Second Amendment grants individuals the right to gun ownership. As one of the attorneys involved in the Heller case, I understand the depth of this constitutional debate.
