When Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington fouled Sophie Cunningham, many turned their criticisms towards Cunningham. Fever coach Stephanie White initially stayed silent. This followed an incident where Caitlin Clark also received heavy scrutiny but little public defense from White.
Heading into a game against the New York Liberty, White finally addressed the issue. Carrington’s harsh play led to her ejection after a foul on Cunningham, sparking widespread attention.
“Our players’ success, health, and safety are top priorities for me,” White stated. She dismissed critiques as “fabricated narratives” aimed at misrepresenting her relationships with players.
Sophie Cunningham addressed the flagrant foul and subsequent online backlash, which some linked to “white privilege.” White attempted to clarify her position, stating she did not witness the play live but believed the call was accurate.
White faced criticism for her silence post-incident. When questioned about her perceived inaction, she responded emotionally, claiming unwavering support for her players. However, critics argued that such support seemed limited to words after the fact.
During her remarks, White emphasized unity and resilience against external negativity:
“Love, grace, and humility will always prevail,” she asserted. “We will not be divided. Every day, these women are strong and united.”
Fever president Kelly Krauskopf later issued a statement in support of White, commending her leadership amid challenging circumstances.
Despite backing from leadership, critics remain unconvinced. They argue White’s defense came too late, leaving Cunningham to handle backlash alone. The incident illustrates tensions within the league around accountability and media narratives.
