WNBA Finals Teams Skip National Anthem, Defy League Rules

50 minutes ago 0

The Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries did not appear on the court during the national anthem before Game 2 of the WNBA Finals on Monday. This mirrored their absence in Game 1, notwithstanding a league rule mandating players to stand and align during the anthem.

As in the first game, both teams left the court shortly before the anthem and returned immediately once the performance concluded. This defiance of the rulebook has drawn attention, but neither team has commented on their actions when asked by OutKick.

League Rulebook and Unanswered Questions

The WNBA’s rulebook requires players, coaches, and trainers to “stand and line up in a dignified posture” during the national anthem. OutKick questioned the league regarding any disciplinary actions planned due to the Game 1 absence. However, no response has been given.

Moreover, OutKick sought confirmation on whether the teams would adhere to this rule in Game 2. The WNBA has not provided any answers to the multiple requests for comment.

Continued Absence and Lack of Communication

Prior to Saturday’s opener, both teams engaged in warm-ups but exited the floor just before the anthem. They re-entered shortly after it finished. Repeated attempts to question the WNBA and both teams regarding any directives or expectations about the anthem were also ignored.

OutKick attended press conferences for both teams on Saturday and prior to Game 2, yet did not receive the opportunity to ask about the anthem situation.

The league remains silent on its policy enforcement, despite the clear expectations outlined in their own rulebook. This issue persists, raising questions about the consistency of rule enforcement within the league.
