Wynonna Judd, the renowned singer, shared her heartbreaking journey with her daughter Grace Kelley’s addiction to methamphetamine. Grace, now 30, has been battling drug addiction, accompanied by legal issues, for over a decade. She’s currently serving a 15-month sentence at Rockingham County Jail in Harrisonburg, Virginia after pleading guilty to a felony charge of driving with a suspended or revoked license. During an interview with Fox News Digital, Judd discussed her painful realization that her efforts to help often enabled Grace’s addiction.
Judd admitted, “I really lost myself with Grace and I enabled her by giving her money for drugs, thinking I was helping her.” She expressed guilt and shame over these actions. The singer advised parents in similar situations to focus on their own well-being, allowing their children to see the peace and attract them towards recovery. Judd said, “Let your light shine. Let them see that peace and hopefully they’ll seek it for themselves.”
The album “The Hard Truth,” Judd’s latest work, reflects her personal experiences including Grace’s struggles. Judd shared her fears, “There might be a chance my daughter doesn’t get clean. As a mother, I’m devastated by her story, and I just had to let go.” Wynonna hasn’t spoken to Grace for a year, noting, “After all these years, the money ran out, and she did too. I have to accept that I did everything I could, which included enabling, and now I’m dealing with the consequences.”
Reflecting on her estrangement from Kelley, Judd emphasized the importance of sobriety, stating that no major decisions should be made until a year of sobriety has been achieved. Judd explained, “I want her to get the help she needs, but she has to want it herself.” Wynonna herself underwent treatment at Shades of Hope Center to address her struggles with food addiction in 2006.
Grace Kelley has faced recurring legal challenges and homelessness since age 17. Judd mentioned a song from her album titled ‘Drive,’ which depicts her visit to Grace in prison. Judd shares Kelley and son Elijah with her first husband, Arch Kelley III. During a past appearance on the “Shawn Ryan Show,” Judd reflected on how her career potentially impacted Grace differently than Elijah. “Grace was jealous of my career as it took me away from her,” Judd noted.
Judd described herself as “a mom in waiting,” hoping for Grace’s recovery from addiction. She commented on Kelley’s repeated incarcerations due to drug use and the dangers of substances like fentanyl. Judd admitted, “I realized I could be a part of the reason she dies. I’m loving her to death.”
Grace’s resentment towards Judd stems from the time Judd’s career took away from their relationship and Judd’s decision to raise Grace’s daughter, Kaliyah. Judd mentioned, “Kaliyah has Type 1 diabetes, needing constant care, so I stepped in to provide that.” Judd and her husband, Cactus Moser, who’ve raised Kaliyah in Tennessee, focus on giving her a grounded childhood away from technology.
On balancing the protection of Kaliyah with leaving the door open for Grace, Judd mentioned her focus is maintaining a grounded environment for Kaliyah. “We live on a farm. She’s a cowgirl. I’m centered on keeping her out of devices,” Judd emphasized. Kelley reportedly had another child while incarcerated, but Judd learned of the child through social media.
