Xavier Vinson’s Impactful Season as Warren’s Quarterback

For Warren senior quarterback Xavier Vinson, reaching this level wasn’t always certain. Throughout his high school career, one constant has remained. “I’ve gone through a lot of adversity,” he said. “I knew I was good enough. I just needed the chance to prove it.”

In his solo season as the varsity starter, Vinson showcases his capabilities. He has achieved 53 completions from 100 pass attempts, totaling 702 yards and seven touchdowns for Warren Blue Devils (3-3, 3-1). They have rebounded from three consecutive losses to become strong contenders in the North Suburban Conference.

Warren coach Bryan McNulty expressed confidence in Vinson’s abilities. “He’s outstanding, and it’s tough to say he’s not the best quarterback in the conference at the moment,” McNulty said. “He’s highly skilled. Our offense is balanced now, almost evenly split, which is uncommon for us. Vinson’s size and explosiveness make this possible.”

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Vinson’s diverse skill set complements his physical stature, leading the Blue Devils to shift their offensive approach. While they can still execute ground-based strategies, Vinson’s passing has introduced a new challenge for opponents, especially in the absence of former star running back Aaron Stewart.

“My passing ability enhances the offense,” Vinson explained. “In the last few years, Aaron allowed us to run primarily. Now, the focus on the quarterback to deliver throws has increased, and I’ve been able to step up. My arm is reliable.”

Senior wide receiver Michael Bunch has noticed the evolution in their preparation. Bunch, averaging 19.4 yards per catch with four touchdowns, remarked, “We’re practicing new routes often. With a quarterback like Xavier, we all get to demonstrate our skills, benefiting the entire offense.”

Despite the rise of their passing game, Warren’s running game remains effective. Junior Jonathan Randolph shines as a key player with 787 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. Vinson’s dual-threat capacity makes a significant impact; he scored during their 49-6 win over Zion-Benton and had a 67-yard run setting up another score. A penalty negated a separate touchdown run by Vinson.

Vinson stated, “My running adds another dimension. It keeps defenses guessing. Credit to my offensive line for creating paths. Being a dual threat contributes greatly.”

Before this year, Vinson hadn’t started a varsity game and played minimally in high school before due to a torn ACL in his freshman year. He then served as Reed Dangel’s backup. When Dangel transferred, Vinson saw an opportunity.

“When Reed transferred, it became my time,” Vinson said. “It was exciting. I could concentrate solely on playing.”

The Blue Devils began the season with a three-game losing streak, challenging Vinson’s confidence until their victory over Mundelein in Week 4. “I had doubts, and as a quarterback, responsibility rests with you,” he noted. “That game turned everything around. Now, I feel confident and prepared to lead.”

Warren’s upcoming opponents have collectively won once, setting the stage for a key match against conference co-leader Lake Zurich. The more games Vinson leads successfully, the more college interest he attracts. Already, four Division III teams have made offers, with scheduled visits upcoming.

Vinson expressed gratitude: “We’ll see how this progresses, but I’m thankful for the opportunities. My hard work has paid off. From past challenges to my current position, it’s been rewarding.”
