49ers Dominate Rams in Australian Opener

The San Francisco 49ers commenced their season with a commanding victory over their divisional rival, the Los Angeles Rams, defeating them 27-7 during an NFL International Series game held in Australia. The match attracted a substantial crowd in Melbourne, marking a significant event for both teams, who endured up to a 16-hour flight from Los Angeles.

The 49ers arrived in Australia almost a week in advance, allowing ample time to adjust to the new environment. In contrast, the Rams landed just over a day before the game. This difference in preparation raised questions about its impact on the Rams’ performance, especially considering they were projected as strong Super Bowl contenders.

Mike Evans, the 49ers’ newly-acquired wide receiver, commented on the Rams’ travel strategy following the game, questioning their decision to arrive later. He humorously asked, “When did they get out here?” Evans emphasized the importance of adjusting to new conditions, suggesting that an earlier arrival could have been beneficial.

Evans joined the 49ers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, adding a valuable asset to their lineup and offering quarterback Brock Purdy another reliable target. Both were instrumental in the victory. Purdy delivered with 205 passing yards and three touchdowns, one of which connected with Evans, who recorded six receptions for 49 yards. Demarcus Robinson contributed with 50 yards and a touchdown, while Deebo Samuel added a touchdown and 48 yards.

Conversely, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford struggled, achieving 155 yards on 15 completions out of 25 attempts, with one interception and no touchdown passes. The Rams managed only 290 yards in total offense, scoring their sole touchdown through running back Kyren Williams.

The disparity in performance suggested that the Rams might have suffered from jet lag, unable to acclimate to the time difference as effectively as the 49ers. Yet, Rams head coach Sean McVay refuted any travel-related excuses, asserting no regrets about their timing and attributing their loss to inadequate play independent of their arrival time.
