A young girl from China has set a new benchmark in the women’s Rubik’s Cube world by solving the 3×3 cube in just over four seconds. This remarkable feat was reported by state media on Tuesday.
Six-year-old Lian Yunzhi shattered the women’s 3×3 average world record twice within three days. She achieved this at two World Cube Association-certified competitions held in Wuhan and Guangzhou. According to state broadcaster CCTV on Monday, Lian posted averages of 4.52 and 4.27 seconds after completing five attempts at solving the Rubik’s Cube.
In a video released by CCTV, Lian is depicted wearing a red gingham bow as she skillfully manipulated the cube. After completing the puzzle, she placed the cube on the table, clapped, and pumped her fist in celebration.
Known by her nickname, ‘Zhizhi,’ Lian hails from Chengdu in China’s southern Sichuan province. CCTV noted that she is ‘the first female speedcuber to average under 4.5 seconds.’
Lian was initially introduced to the Rubik’s Cube when enrolled in a class as part of her extracurricular activities, alongside dance and music lessons. Her mother, Lin Yangxi, revealed to local media that she recognized the potential of cubing to enhance a child’s abilities, shifting her focus onto it.
Lin highlighted that her daughter has mastered over 1,300 Rubik’s Cube-solving algorithms, dedicating 2 to 3 hours to practice daily. Pictures from Red Star News showcased Lian’s trophies displayed proudly in their home.
Lin articulated the benefits of solving a Rubik’s Cube, citing improvements in focus, memory, logical thinking, and spatial awareness. She emphasized that cubing is not just about memorizing formulas but involves logical reasoning to find optimal solutions.
