Former Prosecutor Charged with Emailing Confidential Records

A former prosecutor from the Justice Department, Carmen Mercedes Lineberger, has been charged with allegedly sending confidential records related to a special counsel investigation into former President Donald Trump. Lineberger, aged 62, faces several charges due to mishandling the final report of special counsel Jack Smith.

She has been charged with:

• One felony count of obstruction of justice
• One felony count of concealing government records
• Two misdemeanor counts of theft of government property valued below $1,000

The indictment in Florida’s Southern District states that Lineberger supposedly altered file names to hide unauthorized document transmissions to her personal email. During this period, she worked as the Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Fort Pierce branch.

Judicial Block on Report

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon had previously prevented the public release of a report volume concerning classified document investigations involving Trump’s estate. FBI Director Kash Patel, through a social media platform, shared news of the charges against Lineberger.

Patel mentioned, “A former Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney who supported Jack Smith’s investigation has been charged with stealing confidential documents.” He stated Lineberger disguised these records as dessert recipes to elude record searches.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Lineberger, now facing serious charges, allegedly forwarded a copy of Smith’s report to her email after receiving it. Prosecutors claimed she saved the documents under misleading file names, such as “chocolate cake recipe.” Judge Cannon had marked the report as sealed, but Lineberger still sent it outside the Department of Justice.

If convicted, Lineberger might serve up to 20 years for obstruction, three years for concealing records, and one year for each theft count. She has pleaded not guilty in federal court.
