Local Entrepreneurs Thrive Through IU Northwest Programs

3 weeks ago 0

Leandra Roche pursued her passion for comprehensive haircare by launching High Definition Hair Design Salon and Academy in Merrillville. Similarly, Noah Miller created Mr. Miller’s Mobile Detailing, a car detailing service operating in Northwest Indiana. Kayla Oberholtzer, a student at Indiana University Northwest, set up a photography business.

Entrepreneurial Achievements

Noah Miller, from Hobart, was busy at work cleaning a customer’s car in St. John, Indiana on May 30, 2026. At 21, Miller owns Mr. Miller’s Mobile Detailing. He, alongside 17 other local entrepreneurs, received recognition for completing IU Northwest’s SEED and IU Innovates programs.

“Your haircare could not just be like anyone else,” Roche said. “If you can’t care for it at home, it’s best to just bring it to the professional.”

The SEED program, a collaboration with Notre Dame’s Urban Poverty and Business Initiative, spans 11 months. It imparts business knowledge coupled with mentorship, explained IU Northwest Business Academy Director Jana Szostek. Roche and Miller completed this program alongside other budding entrepreneurs like Naté Billingsley, Jetaun Carr, and Christal Jackson.

Additionally, eight entrepreneurs recently finished the semester-long IU Innovates program, following the SEED model, to aid students, faculty, and staff aspiring to start businesses. Participants included Kayla Oberholtzer, Julysa Alamo, and Chloe Echols-Taylor.

Roche and Miller’s Business Pursuits

Roche, 49, a stylist for 30 years, previously operated a salon called A Joyous Look. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she closed her salon to reassess her career path. Focused on high-definition hair care for naturally curly hair, she opened a new salon where clients receive individual care based on their unique hair needs.

Miller started his detailing business in February 2025 and officially registered it in July 2025. He operates using a vehicle equipped with a water tank and generator, offering services such as car washing, scratch removal, and interior detailing.

Leveraging Experience and Knowledge

Before starting his business, Miller worked at Walmart and sought higher income. His background in vehicle work, paired with low startup costs, led him to pursue detailing. He practiced diligently before formally launching the business with prepared logos and promotional material.

Similarly, Oberholtzer, 20, manages Kaymae Photos LLC, focusing on portrait photography. She prioritizes personalized experiences for clients, ensuring they cherish their photographs. Her passion began in high school during her involvement with the yearbook team.

Learning and Expansion

Roche used the SEED program to improve her management skills. She aims to expand her business into cosmetology, having learned the necessary steps through the program. Miller emphasized the importance of networking to grow his business. His vision includes expanding his team and operations.

Oberholtzer found value in marketing, pricing strategies, and business planning. She benefited from connecting with like-minded entrepreneurs, fostering an environment where exchanging ideas and pursuing success was encouraged.
