Pro-Israel College Students React to Shifts in Democratic Party Politics

Pro-Israel college students have observed an increase in socialism and anti-Israel activism on campuses. They believe these political trends are now impacting the Democratic Party, causing a shift among some young Jewish voters toward the right.

Addison Stone, a University of Michigan senior, expressed concern about the campus climate post-October 7, saying, “America is bad, and we’re gonna learn about that.” At the Israel on Campus Coalition’s national summit in Washington, students noted that political trends on campuses are now more visible in Democratic politics, particularly as the party’s progressive wing gains influence.

Dylan Goldman, a senior at UC Berkeley, identified as “left-leaning,” criticized Democratic lawmakers for embracing socialist candidates hostile to Israel, describing this decision as “really poor.” He noted that Jewish Democrats who do not prioritize a single issue feel alienated by the party and are being pushed further right.

Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate supported by the democratic socialist movement, won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. This victory is part of a series for left-wing candidates challenging the Democratic establishment as the party seeks control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.

The summit in Washington hosted hundreds of pro-Israel students for advocacy training, networking, and discussions on supporting Israel, combating antisemitism, and strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship on college campuses. Stone mentioned that academics are “indoctrinating” students with ideas promoted in classes and on social media, resulting in actions such as burning American and Israeli flags.

As political divisions play out nationally, summit organizers highlighted the ongoing campus hostility faced by Jewish students. Jacob Baime, CEO of Israel on Campus Coalition, said, “The hostility is out in the open now: mobs on the quad, intimidation in the classroom, and harassment online.” However, Baime noted that students remain resilient, stating, “This generation isn’t backing down.” The summit brought over 1000 campus leaders to Washington to equip them with skills to advocate for their beliefs on campus.

John Fetterman, who spoke at the event, addressed the Democratic Party’s changing stance toward Israel and the Jewish community, citing it as increasingly significant. His support for Israel has often conflicted with his party members, particularly regarding the broader Middle East conflict and his support for Trump’s actions against Iranian nuclear facilities.

Fetterman remarked on his unique position, stating, “I think I was the only Democrat to support the Trump administration to bomb the Iranian nuclear facilities.” He argued that the threat from Iran affects values beyond Israel, framing it as a battle over American values and the West’s role in the region, concluding, “I’m proud to stand for America, civilization, democracy, and Israel is our special ally that represents all of that in that region.”
